Aerial Photography in Devon

Shooting from a helicopter, this is an image taken above the River Dart. The aerial photography was commissioned by Knight Frank ( www.knightfrank.com ) for forthcoming advertising.
I only use helicopters for aerial photography as it gives me much more control of the angles and height I am shooting from. Working with the pilot Andrew Harvey  ( A.H. Helicopters ) over the last four years, I have been lucky enough to see Devon, Cornwall, Dorset, and Somerset from the air.

Image of the week

This is my favourite pic of the week.
The image has been shot on a Canon 5D, then
processed with photoshop using
a plug-in made by Nik Software.
Alas sadly the days of the darkroom have gone, for me at least.
I think better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all..................

I've been waiting, er....... twenty years

One of my favorite photographs, taken whilst studying photography at Plymouth College of Art and Design has just sold in Holland. The image taken on infrared film will be used on the cover of the book 'Duivelseed', out in the autumn. Twenty years on the image will find a wider audience.

Advertising and Promotion

It's time to promote myself! This is a design I'm working on for the wheelcover of my vehicle. I've had positive feedback, but any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

Gavin Cox musician

I'm pleased to say my website (still under construction, hurry up Will) is bringing in new jobs. The musician Gavin Cox commissioned me to do the photography for his forthcoming album. We did a shoot on the beach at Dawlish and one in Exeter. I just received this email. Hi James, Many thanks for the second round of photography, some really strong images amongst them, very pleased, I am sending them off to my myspace page right away and my designer can use them for the album. I will certainly insist on crediting you with your link on my album sleeve for you excellent work. Once gain thanks so much, Gavin

In the bookshops now

The Susan Hill book 'The Vows of Silence' is my most recent book cover image in the U.K. I took the photograph using the camera self timer, its my hand!  To date the image has been sold in the UK, Holland, and Portugal.
The expression 'crime doesn't pay', isn't quite right in this case. All you need is some coloured glass, a toy gun, and a little imagination.
More images from this shoot can be viewed at www.arcangel-images.com.

Architectural Interiors

This is one of my favourite architectural images taken recently. Photographed for a Jackson Stops and Staff property brochure. I was pleased to get positive feedback from the client, the following is taken from her email,
"Thank you so much for the photos, they are excellent and I am really delighted with them as they capture a lot of the Springfield feeling."
( The image is a good example of why it worth paying for the best lens. The image is taken on the Canon 16-35mm L series lens. Shot at 16mm focal length there is little distortion (barrelling), and no flare from the low sun. )

Image of the week

Hello folks, this is my favourite image of the week. The legs belong to Charlotte a lady I met on the school run. With Sophie my daughter at my side I was able to convince her I wasn't pushing some dodgy chat up line. The image is part of a set done aimed at the crime fiction book market and will be marketed worldwide by Trevillion Images (www.trevillion.com). Crime novels are one of the biggest areas of the book market and demand for creative images is strong. To date the 'diamond doors' image of Mel has sold four times, twice in the U.S.A. Other successful images include the gangster shot of Holly in a tunnel, which recently sold in Mexico of all places. It's just a question of coming up with the ideas, finding models, locations, and having the technical ability to follow it though. Come to think of it, it's not that easy!

Landie on Location

I've just taken delivery of a Land Rover defender 11o to replace poor Berty. Yes I'm still mourning his departure, but those who new and loved (?) him will be pleased to know he's started a new life with a fencing contractor in Devon. I will miss the pleasure gained from parking Berty (An EX AA van) on the finest driveways in the South West. I think leaving Berty in front of Bovey Castle alongside an Aston and Hummer must rate tops. The doorman not 100% sure I was a 'tradesman', I just smiled and walked right on by........... Back to Landie, any suggestions of names welcome. My first impressions of the vehicle are, great engine (the new 2.4td), good off roading, and cramped interior. You can't win them all! but we can now take five little darlings at one time, should we wish.....
